Dr Sebastian Thomas has co-authored a paper titled 'The potential to integrate blue carbon into MPA design and management', published in the journal Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems on 7 September 2017.
The paper looks at ways in which Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) can encourage protection and management of carbon sequestered in mangroves, coastal marshes and seagrass meadows - known as 'blue carbon'.
With blue carbon on the agenda of many carbon finance institutions, this paper provides proposals for MPA design to be integrated with 'blue economics'.
By providing sustainable funding through carbon finance mechanisms, the design of MPAs could be extended to have significant benefits for conservation, restoration, emission reduction and sustainable development objectives.
